Lake Matheson

US$0.00

Client: Department of Conservation

Location: Te Ara Kairaumati | Lake Matheson, Westland

Collaborators: Tennent + Brown Architects (Architect), Department of Conservation (Project Management), MWWH (Engineer)

Year Completed: 2013

Lake Matheson is a popular West Coast destination for many visitors seeking to access the impressive views of Aoraki (Mount Cook) and its reflections in the lake. The existing car park and toilet facilities could not adequately meet projected needs, which required their upgrade and redevelopment.

This collaborative concept endeavoured to address both capacity and environmental issues within the framework of a partnership between the Department of Conservation and adjacent landowners. The design delivers a reconfigured car park, arrival and café spaces, toilet facility and clarified track entry. The revised car park was designed to meet future visitor projections while providing storm water filtration through bio retention swales.
