Hood Street

US$0.00

Client: Hamilton City Council

Location: Kirikiriroa | Hamilton

Collaborators: Hamilton City Council (Project management), Claude Hidber (Lighting Design), MWH (Engineer), SKM (Electrical Engineer)

Year Completed: 2008

Hamilton CBD’s southern quarter has evolved into a dynamic part of the city’s identity. Hood St helps defines this new precinct, accommodating a vibrant range of retail, commercial and entertainment activities, which operate day and night. The design delivers a rich and varied pedestrian experience along the street edge, incorporating planted raingardens, furniture and lighting to develop a sophisticated urban language, unique to place. This project involved collaboration with lighting artist Claude Hidber to transform the character of Hood Street after dark. Laser cut tree screens with rainfall/floral abstractions cut into them reflect past programme, while light projection and cube seats with a laser-cut ‘lace’ mesh subtly express aspects of the site’s cultural history.
